The Vision Only You Can See

Having vision beyond what the eyes can see, what the brain remembers, or what the heart can make sense of can feel isolating.

In a world built to repeat history in loops of comfort and control, holding a vision that breaks that cycle can make you feel misplaced, as if you are walking upstream while everyone else floats downstream.

But this is the thing about vision. It does not ask for permission to make sense.

As humans, we find comfort in predictability. When the unexpected happens, we grasp for meaning and share our discomfort like a badge of solidarity.

We say things like, “I stubbed my toe this morning, no wonder my whole day went left.”

That tiny moment gets all the credit, all the energy, all the story power.

Meanwhile, the bigger vision, the one that has been nudging your thoughts day after day, is dismissed. You overanalyze it, explain it away, or place it on a shelf for “someday.”

I get it.

During the 2020 reroute, I made myself a shirt that said VISIONARY.

But here is the twist. I pressed the word VISIONARY backwards on the shirt.

It was not a design mistake. It was a message.

The vision is not meant for everyone to see clearly. It is meant for you. Only when I looked in the mirror did the word read the right way.

That was when it hit me.
The vision is not backwards.
It is reflected.

The mirror represents your perspective, your belief, and your faith in what you have been shown, even when it does not yet make sense to anyone else.

You are the visionary.

Not your pastor.
Not your parents.
Not your friends or even your spouse.

Reclaim your vision. Stand in it unapologetically. Let the world catch up later.

Your Transformation Begins Here
Your transformation does not begin when others finally see your potential.
It begins when you do.
It starts in reflection and realization, not in validation.

Next comes your mirror moment.

Stand in front of that mirror and ask yourself:

“What vision have I been talking myself out of because no one else can see it yet?”

This is not the time to edit or revise the truth. Be honest with yourself, even if you have no idea how it will all work out.

Your vision does not have to be grand or world-changing. Changing your own world is just as important and just as impactful.

How to Live as a Visionary
To live as a visionary in a world built for conformity, you need to:

  • Build self-trust.
Keep your inner rhetoric in tune so you know when to move and when to wait.
  • Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses honestly, without judgment.
  • Assess the opportunities and threats that come with your calling and learn to be an optimistic realist.
  • Take the first step without worrying how it looks or whether you feel ready.

Four Mindset Shifts to Hold Faith Through Uncertainty

  1. From wondering if this vision fits your ego story, to knowing you are the author of your life and can change it whenever you choose.
  2. From asking where should I start, to asking what is the lowest-hanging fruit I can act on right now.
  3. From believing you need a business partner or a team for this to work, to realizing you can do this on your own.
  4. From asking what will people think, to remembering that your own thoughts of yourself matter most.

My Story
In 2014, I went on a life-changing adventure, packing what I could into two suitcases and moving to China. What was meant to be a single school year became four.

During that time, I got married in Hong Kong, gave birth in Shenzhen, started a physical products business, and built a global community of friends who changed me in ways I could not have predicted.

My vision was simple. I wanted to start a business, but at that time, no one was explaining how to get products from China to the States. I decided to figure it out on my own.

A college roommate I followed on social media was in Asia. One day, I saw a picture of her on an elephant in Thailand, and I could not shake the thought. I said aloud, I am going to be on that elephant. The elephant had nothing to do with my business vision, but it became a symbol of possibility.

At a time when I could have followed the traditional path i.e. settling down, starting a family, or checking off someone else’s version of success, I chose to make my vision real.

I applied for a teaching position eight days before the application closed, completed my interviews, and got the job. Because I applied late, I had to complete background checks, pay program fees, secure my China invitation letter, get a temporary visa, and book my flight all within a few months.

I did not have a job at the time, but I had support. Shout out to my mom and my then-boyfriend, now husband.

I sold my car to pay for the program. I took a temporary job with a sketchy travel agency to pay for my flight. I walked and worked out every day, losing sixty-five pounds, only to still be called fat in China. 😂

I share this to show that I held on to the vision I had and did not let it go, even when there was no logical reason to board that flight.
